Democracy is not a spectator sport

How do I use OurSay

Post a Question

Ask the questions you want asked about the issues you want to tackle. If you're not sure what to ask, browse other questions and vote for them.

Spread the word

Get friends to vote for your favourite questions through social media channels like Facebook and Twitter.

Get voting for your question. Or vote for other questions.

Check out other questions and vote for the questions you like. Remember you only have 7 votes (Which is more votes than the government gives you). We will reset your votes at the start of each OurSay!

See the Politicians Responding to Your Question on Oursay.Org

Once the voting and question period ends we take the most popular questions and wrangle community leaders to respond.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Why was OurSay created?

We want you to have direct access to the people in charge. OurSay gets the people in charge to answer your questions.

What can I ask?

We want to foster serious political debate. We want to ask hard-hitting questions. You can ask any question to do with politics. If it is one of the top-voted questions, it will be answered by a politician or discussed by a panel of experts. Questions on OurSay.org range from proposing a legal age for highly caffeinated drinks, to carbon pricing, to the politics of palm oil.

What is an OurSay Forum?

We get politicians, or other people in positions of power, to answer your questions. When we have locked in a specific time for them to answer your questions at a live discussion, the clock starts ticking. You can post a question you would like to ask them. Get your friends to vote for your question. Or vote for other questions. You only have seven votes per OurSay Forum.

When the timer runs out, the top-voted questions will be put to the pollies. Their response will be recorded, and the video will be posted on OurSay.org.

Want your question answered? Get active and muster as much support and as many votes as you can for your question, before the timer runs out. Check out past and current OurSay Forums. Post, vote and share questions on OurSay Forums that are currently being counted down.

How many questions can I post?

As many as you want.

Why do I only get seven votes?

Think of it this way: democracy is about using your vote with discretion – you usually only get one. We are giving you seven! Use them wisely.

Do I get seven votes for each OurSay Forum?

Yes. For every new OurSay Forum you will get seven new votes. Use them wisely.

Do you have to use all seven of your votes in one session, or can you use them on different logins?

You can login and logout as often as you like. You get seven votes from the moment the clock starts ticking to the moment the OurSay Forum is closed. Your profile will remember the number of votes you have left each time you login.

Why can’t I vote questions down?

We want to know the questions you care about, not the questions you don’t care about. Don’t like a question? Make sure your preferred question gets more votes.

Can I modify or edit my question once it is posted?

No. Think carefully, and review your question before you post. If you made an embarrassing grammatical or spelling mistake we will try to fix it for you. Email theteam@oursay.org.

Who chooses the people answering the questions?

For now, we do. But we want this to change. We would like you to choose them. Let us know who you want to see on OurSay.org, and we’ll try and make it happen. OurSay.org is not limited to politicians. We can approach industry and cultural leaders too – anyone in a position of power. Let us know who you want to see on OurSay.org.

Is OurSay.org only relevant to Australian politics?

For the moment, yes. But we have big dreams. We are looking to grow OurSay.org internationally. For now, we are developing OurSay.org to be relevant at all levels of Australian politics – local, state, federal, and eventually, global. But hey, if you want to see an internationally focussed OurSay Forum, then email theteam@oursay.org. We are keen to hear your ideas, as long as they are relevant to Australia.

Are you members of political parties?

No. We are not aligned with any political parties. In fact, we think political parties are losing relevance to the electorate. We think political debate can be more complex and more innovative than party-based politics. That’s why we started OurSay.

Is OurSay a business?

Yes. We are in the business of making the world a better place by activating democracy. OurSay represents a new model of socially responsible enterprise. We believe it is possible to make money and make the world a better place at the same time. OurSay is run as an incorporated company limited by shares owned by a board of directors. OurSay needs to have capital to be able to respond flexibly to the demands of our industry. We will reinvest profits in OurSay.org, to fund more OurSay Forums and to make the web app more powerful.
