The People's Question
In February, Crikey.com.au and OurSay gave you the opportunity to get your question asked in House of Representatives through a secret MP.
Crikey.com.au featured a new reader's question each week, and looked at where/how and why of the issue.
After voting closed, it was revealed the secret MP was Adam Bandt, the member for Melbourne. He plans to take the top question on the OurSay site (which is about end-of-life decision-making) into parliament house on Wednesday the 14th of March. Stay tuned to our website, Facebook page and Twitter for updates.
The Question
To the Minister for Defence. (a) Can you guarantee that no Uranium mined in Australia will ever be used in nuclear weapons, armour piercing ammunition or stabilizers for aircraft? (b) Are Australian troops exposed to Uranium dusts in current conflicts? (c) Given that over half the Gulf War veterans have measurable Uranium in their urine, are any exposed Australian troops being monitored for cancer and birth defects in their children or grandchildren, as is being done for US troops? (d) Do you guarantee that no armour piercing Uranium warheads will be used by US or other ally forces in practice firing in Australia or any of its territories?
We know that Australian tanks have Uranium in their armour, making dispersal of Uranium certain if Australian tanks are penetrated in battle.
