The Queensland Agenda
Campbell Newman participated in The Queensland Agenda OurSay in January, where you asked the questions in the lead up to the Queensland election. His responses to the three most popular submissions can be found on our blog at blog.oursay.org.
I would add to this that if serious about reducing accidents and driver speed, would your Government support mandatory signage well in advance of these cameras to warn drivers of their presence? This would reduce speed and demonstrate these cameras are not just a cash cow, but truly for road safety.
How about more "police on the beat"?.... it is actualy a surprise to see a police car out on the roads these days!
"This is despite the fact that speed is not a factor in the majority of fatal crashes." I think you will find speed is a major factor in many fatal crashes. Just watch the nightly news and you will see.
Speed is one of the fatal four factors. sometimes it is the major cause,.other times it is a contributory cause. people thinbk they are better drivers than they are and think they are free to ignore road rules and speeds. speeds of roads are set after careful consultation with road construction experts as well as main roads, etc. speed kills. speeders need to be caught and fined. it is not merely revenue raising and thats an old chestnut to minimise the issue. more speed cameras, more fines!!!!!!
I agree that speed is a factor in a number of crashes, don't get me wrong, but it is not the greatest factor in fatal accidents. The issue given as a contributing factor in the largest number of traffic accidents is failure to follow road rules/signs other than speed. The issue is that speed cameras are not being used as they are designed (for high risk areas), but rather in high revenue areas. More police, with a highly visible presence is definitely a good solution, but the state government prefers to cheaper and more profitable solution of hiding speed cameras and removing the situation where drivers recieve their fines immediately on commiting an offence. I agree with the
A lot of our roads are quite capable of handling higher speed limits than are currently set. let the general traffic flow govern the limits on roads, coulped with higher levels of mandatory training for all drivers and pushbike riders (who wish to use the road systems). Speed cameras don't reduce accidents, they frustrate and increase travel times. more police presence works more effectively. Also increase the speed limits between Cooroy and the section of highway north of Gympie to that which it should be for a main north south Hoghway. (90 Kms what a Joke)!!
