The Queensland Agenda
Campbell Newman participated in The Queensland Agenda OurSay in January, where you asked the questions in the lead up to the Queensland election. His responses to the three most popular submissions can be found on our blog at blog.oursay.org.
Can Queensland please show what a progressive state we are and get on board with daylight savings.
Is there any reason why we cant have a trial of DS in SEQ and then a referendum - this is a decision that should be made by Queenslanders and not by politicians
Can you quit pandering to the rural vote on daylight saving, it's unfair on the majority of Queenslanders and downright undemocratic to say the least. Every Queenslander's vote should be worth the same !
I think that this is more about lifestyle than aligning with NSW. The majority in SEQ dont want light at 4.30am and would prefer more light in the evening. The majority in regional QLD are happy with their times of daylight. The solution is simple - two time zones. It works fine in the rest of the world
I think it's unfair that just because regional queenslanders don't want this that those of us in SE Qld are subjected to daylight from 4:45am. It's just plain silly.
Anna Bligh was presented research from the Nielsen company in 2007, which clearly indicated that a majority of ALL Queenslanders (59%) want Daylight Saving, and 69% of residents in the south-east want it. Bligh consulted the people in 2010, which illustrated that 64% want a trial and referendum on Daylight Saving in south-east Queensland. Bligh denied the majority on both occasions, citing that she doesn't want to upset those living in regional Queensland. The majority are sick and tired of Daylight Saving being pushed to the side because it's perceived as being too hard to resolve, due to political implications. We want a state leader who has courage to tackle this important issue, rather than ignoring Daylight Saving because they fear some potential political backlash. A precendent was set in 1992, by allowing the people their say on this issue, via a referendum following a trial. A lot has changed in Queensland over the last two decades, so Queenslanders deserve a chance to have their say on this significant business and lifestyle issue.
It's time introduce daylight saving to QLD (AEDT AEDT) many options available to keep everyone happy as in applying to whole state and move Longreach, Cloncurry, and Mt Isa on Central time (ACST ACDT) which is 30 mins behind. This would give western districts of Qld true solar noon better sunrise and sunset times year round. A temporary measure just apply Daylight Saving to the South East of QLD until new time borders are drawn.
To those whinging about the time zones and day light savings, wake up an hour earlier and quit whining. You clearly have first world problems. The cost of a referendum is prohibitive and inefficient, and the money could be better spent on issues which actually have a noticable effect on the state's economy, like education programs or health programs, rather than wasting it on some campaign to upset half the state.
DLS is a non issue. I would prefer an explaination on how it would "benefit businesses, particularly small businesses and those in the tourism, retail and finance industries." If you're unable to calculate time differences, schedule meetings effectively etc you shouldn't be in business.
South-East Queensland should observe Daylight Savings time, the rest of Queensland should stay on non Daylight Savings time. Problem solved. (For those idiots who thinks a state can only have one time zone, Broken Hill is half an hour behind the rest of New South Wales ALL YEAR ROUND and seem to cope fine so why can't Queensland have two different time zones for half a year).
