The Queensland Agenda
Campbell Newman participated in The Queensland Agenda OurSay in January, where you asked the questions in the lead up to the Queensland election. His responses to the three most popular submissions can be found on our blog at blog.oursay.org.
This is a proposterous suggestion. In the majority of Queensland in summer the last rays of light don't dissapear until 8pm and the sun doesn't properly begin to set until 7:15-7:30. This suggestion would mean the sun wouldn't even start to set until 8pm in most of Queensland during summer. From my perspective, the majority of Queenslanders do not support daylight saving.
It would mean last light in some places (like Longreach) would have last light at about 8:30pm. That's no later than Sydney, and it's awesome! In Brisbane last light would be at about 8:15pm.
Let's try and drop the 'redneck' tag held by QLD since Joh took office and 'get with the program'. Its not as if we're playing with the tides or the orbit of the moon etc etc, give locals and tourists another reason to spend money well into the evening at one of a thousand great places this State has to offer.
It's time introduce daylight saving to QLD (AEDT AEDT) many options available to keep everyone happy as in applying to whole state and move Longreach, Cloncurry, and Mt Isa on Central time (ACST ACDT) which is 30 mins behind. This would give western districts of Qld true solar noon better sunrise and sunset times year round. A temporary measure just apply Daylight Saving to the South East of QLD until new time borders are drawn.
There is already a well-supported daylight saving question, lodged by John Burkett. So rather than split the vote and risk not having any DST question in the top three, we should support the existing question. :-)
Tristan - for the majority of residents (ie SEQ), the latest the sun sets is 6.48pm. We dont want light at 4.30am and darkness at 7pm in summer. The solution is simple - those who dont want it (ie regional QLD) can just opt out and stay on standard time
Suzie, I agree Tristan simply has it wrong. Forget about all the time differences for a moment. Daylight comes to the S.E. of Queensland before any other part of the Australian mainland, hence it gets light in mid summer just after 4 in the morning, likewise it gets dark about 7 p.m., that's earlier earlier than anywhere else too. With daylight saving in S.E. Queensland it would still be light just after 5 a.m. and dark just after 8 p.m. We would need 2 hours of daylight saving to be close to the hours of light and dark to be similar to just about everywhere else. For say Cairns and Longreach they already have daylight saving due to their geographical position so leave them alone. Don't use the business argument. There are different time zones all round the world and major differences now within Australia - we get used to it. To enjoy S.E. Queensland in summer we and all the tourists who spend money here NEED daylight saving.
No way in the world do we want or need Daylight Saving here in Queensland. Western Australia rejected it and so should we we. Don't, under any circumstances by picking the State apart piecemeal with one part of Queensland having DS and not the rest. It is a recipe for disaster and those that say "we are out of step" with NSW and Vic" - what abou the time differences with Sth.Aust and WA which will still exist.
David - WA rejected it because Perth, unlike Brisbane lies in the western part of its time zone and has 35 minutes of daylight saving already compared to Brisbane - 95 (60 + 35) minutes of daylight saving would probably be rejected in Brisbane as well but not ^0 minutes. Why on earth would two time zones in QLD be a disaster - there are 5 time zones in Australia in summer - surely using two of them in QLD should be easy.
Let's not be bullied by the southern states and commercial greed into a system of time that is not suited for the MAJORITY of Queensland.
