The Question
Your father stopped sand mining on Fraser Island in just 6 weeks due to the "major permanent and irreversible damage" caused. Sand mining on Stradbroke Island is just as destructive and threatens vulnerable frog species. The Bligh government extended Stradbroke sand mining for 14 years. What is your policy, will you follow your father's footsteps and STOP DESTRUCTIVE SAND MINING?
Mr. Newman, Are you really going to extend sand-mining on North Stradbroke Island when 50% of it has finally been declared National Park?
Yep. I am old enough to have seen Fraser Island mined, and the incredible change when Fraser island was not mined. Old enough to have seen the massive sand slip from Straddie into Moreton Bay in the late 1980s caused by sand mining. And I am young enough at heart to believe that you can stop sand mining ripping the heart out of Straddie.
